Counseling Services offers:

Services for Students

Individual Counseling: Individual counseling is offered to students who wish to discuss personal concerns. Common issues include academic stress, anxiety or depression, relationship problems, decisions about careers, and adjustment to college life. Counseling for alcohol and drug use issues, problematic eating and food issues, or physical or sexual abuse is also available.

Marital/Couple Counseling: Martial/couple counseling is offered to partners who are experiencing difficulties and wish to improve the quality of their relationship. If needed, anger management, domestic violence prevention, and personal safety issues can be addressed.

Workshops and Group Counseling: A variety of one-hour workshops are offered each academic year, addressing personal growth, academic success strategies, and related topics. Group counseling is also offered at times for specific issues such as men's concerns or coping with food and weight issues.

Psychological Testing: Counseling Services offers individual psychological testing on a limited basis usually to assess career interests or personal issues. Testing is performed in conjunction with an established counseling relationship with professional staff.

Services for Faculty & Staff

Counseling Services is a resource for the campus regarding psychological issues and interpersonal/group dynamics.

Consultation Regarding Students: Each semester a few students develop personal or academic problems which affect their overall progress and professional performance. Consultation with Counseling Services is often useful in identifying strategies to help such students. Call 509-324-7363 (confidential voice mail). If no answer and you need immediate assistance, call 324-7338 or 324-7203.

Note: Please do not use e-mail to communicate concerns about students or anyone else. E-mail is not confidential. Please use voice mal.

Consultation Regarding Personal Issues: Counseling Services offers confidential consultation and brief counseling regarding personal and career issues to faculty and staff without charge. Typically, consultations involve 1 to 3 half-hour or hourly sessions. If additional assistance is required, referrals can be made to community providers or the Washington State Employee Assistance Program. Call 509-324-7363 (confidential voice mail). If no answer and you need immediate assistance, call 509-324-7338 or 324-7203.

Workshops and Class Presentations: Counseling Services offers expertise in a variety of areas, including professional communication, assertiveness, organizational behavior, career planning, and job searching. Material in these areas can be presented to students in stand-alone workshops, classroom guest presentations, lectures, or co-instruction using mini-modules within a particular course. To discuss possible collaborative projects, call Jack Severinghaus 509-324-7363 or email severing@wsu.edu. Special arrangements for consultation can also be made.

Self-help Resources

An increasing variety of hardcopy and internet self-help resources are available regarding emotional, psychological, wellness, and medical/health issues. Resources listed in this section have been previewed and approved by college and university counseling and health service professionals.

Caution: Self-help materials can be quite useful but cannot substitute for the care provided by counseling and health care professionals. Self-help information is often best used for personal treatment of minor issues or as adjunctive material during a course of psychological counseling or medical treatment. Often a good strategy is to consult a professional first and then review viable self-help materials, so optimal strategies for problem-solving can be selected. Counseling or health professional staff may refer you to specific self-help materials, or you can present materials you have found for discussion and possible integration with your treatment or counseling.

Counseling Services has access to recent professional reviews of a variety of self-help resources. Call 509-324-7363.

Internet self-help resources:

Go Ask Alice is a web site offering sensible, accurate information on a wide variety of psychological and medical/health issues. This site is maintained by Columbia University.

The National Mental Health Association offers extensive and information regarding anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
